Multiscale Modeling Strategy
The most expensive multiscale mistake is building models at scales that never connect properly. Strategy consulting on scale selection, tool matching, and validation design, from someone who builds the models at every scale personally.
Who this is for
Research groups planning a multi-year computational campaign who want the scale-connection strategy right before committing resources. Industrial R&D teams evaluating whether a multiscale approach is worth the investment for their specific problem. PI teams writing a grant proposal that needs a defensible, reviewer-proof multiscale workflow described in the methods section.
This is advisory work, not model-building — though it is delivered by someone who builds the models at every scale personally, which is what makes the strategy realistic rather than aspirational.
What the consulting covers
Why me
Most multiscale strategy advice comes from people who are strong at one scale and theorize about the rest. I build models at every scale in the chain myself — phase field, crystal plasticity, and macro FEM — which means the strategy I recommend accounts for what each scale's models actually need as input and what they realistically produce as output, not an idealized handoff that looks clean on a diagram and breaks in practice.

He helped me develop a sophisticated analytical approach and a compelling visualization for a complex project that ultimately received high praise from my management team. — Abdelrahman Baraka, MSc Steel Technology, TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany
How it works
- 15-minute call. Describe the material system and the property or process question the campaign needs to answer.
- Strategy session. Typically 1–2 weeks: scale selection, tool matching, and a data-handoff design your team can execute against.
- Optional ongoing review. Checkpoint sessions as the campaign runs, or a one-time strategy document if that is all you need.
Common questions
Do you build the models too, or only the strategy?
Both are available. Many clients want the strategy to execute with their own team; others want the strategy plus hands-on modeling at specific scales, covered under crystal plasticity or phase field consulting.
Is this useful before a grant proposal is written?
Very much so — a defensible multiscale workflow in the methods section is exactly what reviewers scrutinize. See also grant proposal consulting for the writing side.
How do you decide which scales actually matter?
By working backward from the property or failure mode in question: which physical mechanism controls it, and at what length scale does that mechanism operate. Scales that do not touch that mechanism can usually be simplified.
Can you review a multiscale campaign already in progress?
Yes — a checkpoint review is often the fastest way to catch a scale-connection problem before it compounds across months of remaining work.
What does a strategy session actually produce?
A written workflow document: which scales are modeled, with which tools, what data passes between them, and where validation happens — something your team can execute against or a reviewer can evaluate.
Start With 15 Minutes
Book a call and describe the material system and question. I will tell you honestly which scales actually need modeling — and which do not.
